I suspect that some combo of *shark or npcap needs updating such that, if the device cannot have its mode set, either the user is prompted to accept that they may lose packets, or simply that the device does not support configuration of the mode (and continue to allow packet capture, would be ideal). Which is fine because the connections are point-to-point anyway. I guess whatever happens under the hood to set +promisc/-promisc on the hardware, simply isn't supported by any modern cellular modems. These errors occur even if Wireshark/tshark are run with administrative rights on Windows. I think it is supposed to be enabled by default and that is how you check to see if it is. If I change the sniffer options to NOT place the device in promiscuous mode, I get an error that the device cannot be set non-promiscuous mode. Click capture, options to verify that promiscuous mode is enabled. If I choose to place the device into promiscuous mode, I get an error that the adapter cannot be placed into promiscuous mode. Promiscuous mode means the network interface is operating in a mode to listen to all network traffic - whether it is addressed to your computer IP or not.
However, tshark/wireshark cannot set the mode of the device.
You could think of a network packet analyzer as a measuring device for examining what’s happening inside a network cable, just like an electrician uses a voltmeter for examining what’s happening inside an electric cable (but at a higher level, of course).
As long as that is checked, which is Wireshark's default, Wireshark will put the adapter into promiscuous mode for you when you start capturing. A network packet analyzer presents captured packet data in as much detail as possible.
